History of Undy A.F.C.

Undy AFC History
Undy A.F.C. was formed in 1947 by Mr. Joe Champion, Mr. Lambert Bird, Mr. Harry Hodges and others. The changing facilities were in Undy Church Hall, using a tin bath for washing. Club colours at that time were black and white.
Unfortunately in 1962 the club was disbanded, due to lack of support. During the period between 1947and 1962 the Argus Shield was won three times.
1970 saw the reformation of the club, the driving force behind this, amongst others, were Mr. John King, Mr. Percy Pope, Mr Malcolm Pope, our president Mr. J.Smith, and the tote organiser Mr. Bob Scrivens, the tote keeping the club on a firm financial setting for more than 10 years. Our junior section was led by Mr. Bernard Smith, Mr. Alf Little and others.
From 1970 to 1981 Undy Football Club operated without any team managers, a selection committee picked the teams every week. The first manager taken on by the club, in 1981, was Mr. Dave Segal. New changing facilities were built on the playing fields in 1974, making the tin bath at the church hall redundant. During the mid-eighties Undy United F.C. took over the management of the Playing Fields from Undy Playing Fields Association, changing our name from Undy United to Undy A.F.C.
In 1992, the football club poured its first pint of beer in its new clubhouse, by obtaining its licence to sell alcohol. 1996 saw the project to extend the clubhouse, providing us with new changing facilities, and more recently in 2005 the development of our new pitch. Our colours changed during this period to the Red that the whole club wears today. Honours achieved by the club since being reformed include several East Gwent titles, including the Argus shield again. Having gained entry to the Gwent Count League, the Gwent County Motors Cup was won in 2004, and with a continual improvement of our first team, we became an established Gwent County Division one side and, with our excellent facilities, we began setting our sights on a place in the Welsh League. During this period our managers included Alan Lancaster, Wayne Jones and John Watkins. Throughout this period the club also established itself as a major force in youth football, boasting one of the largest junior sections in south wales and hosting widely acclaimed tournaments.
Finally, in season 2010/2011, under the management team of Mark Crook and Jason Davies, we finally fulfilled our ambition by being crowned Division one Champions and gaining promotion into the Welsh Football League. Our time in The Welsh League has been a successful one, with us winning the Third Division in our first season, and gaining promotion to Division two. Over the next three seasons, still under the guidance of Mark Crook, we came agonisingly close to gaining a further promotion, missing out by a single point in successive seasons. However, in 2015/16, now under the management of Laurence Owen (with Mark Crook as Director of football), we achieved our objective, and gained promotion to the top tier of Welsh League football. Two excellent mid table finishes in the following seasons, under Laurence’s management, see us start the 2018/19 season as an established first division side.
Laurence Owen retired from football management at the end of 2017/18 and the Club have appointed Jason Pritchard to take them forward. A new pitch is being laid for season 2018/19, a major investment that shows the club is still trying to improve off the pitch as well as on it.

Liam Grant

Very quick right sided player.Reads the game well. With Bridgend Street last season.

Ben Davies

Ben is Player/Coach. He is an experienced player and joined us after spells with Cinderford Town and Caerleon , he is a centre midfielder with a good range of passing and a good engine , he is another of the Newport contigent brought in by LWO during preseason 2013 and was appointed Player/Coach in 2015. A cruciate injury in 2014 has yet to see him back in the starting line up.

Ben Roberts

Ben was appointed as Assistant Player/Manager to LWO in 2015 and great to have  in the dug out,  a no-nonsense centre half who is good in the air and strong in the tackle, a good club man and 2013/14 seasons supporters player of the year

Dan Morgan

Dan is a new signing for 2015/16 season from Lydney and a player the Manager had wanted at the club for a while, a left sided player who is comfortable in a deep or attacking role, will really prosper in Division 1

Dan Jarman

Dan broke into the first team squad during season 2013 and has remained there since , a very pacey young lad who has a rocket of a shot , was also captain and a star of our under 19s, his improvement last season speaks volumes for his willingness to learn.  .

Gareth Cullimore

Gareth  has played for Caldicot and Goytre Utd but was one of the main reasons behind the teams rise in the last few seasons as he rejoined the club he first played for many years ago .
A striker who guarantees you plenty of goals a season and a key figure in the first team.

Gareth Heywood

Gareth is oneof  the fittest members of the squad despite being the wrong side of 30 . A left back or centre half. His wealth of experience is great in the dressing room and on the pitch

Gyles Thompson

Gyles is another one club man, a left back / wing back with a good all round game , Mr Reliabilty come match day and a consistent performer, a manager's dream and appointed first team captain for this season

James Barnes

Marcus Power

Marcus has signed for us after a spell away from the game, comfortable in midfield or as a striker he is a proven Welsh league player after spending 10 seasons with Llanwern AFC joining them from Newport County's academy .

Paul Clayton

Despite just turning 18 Paul looks an accomplished centre half at any level , a big part of the under 18s and 19s, he has already figured in a number of games for the first team and never looks out of his depth for such a young lad and will have many seasons ahead of him as a Welsh League footballer

Rhys Aherne

Ernie joined us from Caerleon AFC , where he was their 2012 /13 Player of the year , a young big and strong Centre half who has good welsh league experience after his spell with Caerleon and originally being introduced to the Welsh League with a spell at Llanwern AFC under our coach LWO.

Tom Hooper

Hoops has plenty of experience , a former Newport County academy player , with spells at  Port Talbot and Llanwern , a cultured midfielder with a sweet right foot .

Tom Wright

Wrighty is another one of our very successful youth set up and has been involved in a number of preseason 2016 friendlies , a very good technical player, he will be a big part of Undy football club for years to come .

Nathan Wood

Woody joined us in August 2015, he is ex Newport County Academy and immediately impressed in training and the Reserves. He is a midfielder but his first two games for the reserves were at wing back and as a striker, at 18 years old he is a promising talent

Olly (Oliver) Smith

Midfield – (Kit Sponsor: Samuel Williams): First team players player of the 2016/17 season. Signed in September 2015 from Undy Athletic Ollie has proved to be a great signing.  Without doubt he thoroughly deserved his players player of the year award after performing consistently well throughout the season. Olly is another former star of our under 19s and tasted first team duties at just 17, great potential and one for the future, a great left foot.

Alex Jarman

Forward - (Kit sponsor required):A product of our under-19 youth team, former Welsh Schools international Alex will be looking to make an impact within this season.  He has blistering pace and is very skilful which can cause any defence problems. If Alex works hard with the squad he could play a big part this season.

Oliver Beckett

Olly Beckett. Becks has returned to the club in pre-season 2016 after a year in Thailand with his job, a great engine, a great pace and overall fitness, a real asset to the squad in any position.

Dean Merrett

Dean is another one of LWO's new signings having joined us preseason from Liswerry, a player capable of playing in defence or midfield but at his strongest in a deep lying midfield role, a whole hearted player

Richard Shier

Ritchie has nearly 20 years experience as a welsh league player and has joined us in preseason 2016, a player who can play in nearly every position on the pitch

Ben Lawrence

Ben was signed by LWO in preseason 2016 from YMCA, a midfielder who loves to get on the ball amd make things happen. A Great signing.

Harry Waterhouse

Harry trained with us at the back end of last season after being released from Newport County Academy and signed in preseason 2016. A technically good player who will hopefully learn and prosper as he enters senior football.

Laurence Owen
