- Match report - Newport City v Llanelli Town

NEWPORT CITY   0   LLANELLI TOWN   6

Yet another Lee Trundle hat-trick, a brace by Jordan Follows and an opener from Jordan Davies, steamrollered the home side to a crushing defeat, and if had not been for the heroics of goalkeeper Adam Webb, the final tally could easily have been doubled.

The visitors were without the services of Richard Lewis, Anthony Finselbach and Adam Jones, but welcomed back, after a lengthy absence through injury, Rhys Powell, and also Luke Morgan, both initially named as substitutes.

With only a solitary win to show from their opening six matches, City were desperate to reverse a losing trend with a good showing, and they opened brightly enough, making inroads into the Reds` half but without offering any real serious goal threat.

As the visitors settled, they began to look menacing, and when Trundle met and controlled a superb Robert Thomas cross, his fierce shot on target was kept out by Webb with Follows just unable to take advantage of the subsequent rebound.

Three goals in the space of six minutes then completely changed the complexion of the contest, firstly when a short Trundle corner found its way to Davies whose blistering angled finish gave Webb no chance on 16 minutes.

Three minutes later, Follows drove a free kick from just outside the box low towards the goal, and it evaded everyone before ending up in the net, while  the lead was stretched further in the 22nd minute after Follows sent Callum Silcox clear down the left, and his driven cross into the middle was turned home by Trundle.

Webb did well to close down Follows in the area from another Trundle assist, before he somehow managed to divert a point blank range effort by Follows over the top following a build-up involving Silcox and Trundle.

Robert Thomas drove over the City bar at the far post when Trundle delivered the cross, and it took a timely defensive block on Trundle to prevent a further goal when he was picked out by Thomas.

Three minutes from the break, the Reds struck again when Chris Thomas sent Follows clear with a superb ball over the top, and he rounded Webb before slotting into a vacant goal.

Four up at the interval, within seconds of the restart it became five with Trundle heading down a Robert Thomas cross past the keeper.

City were being run ragged, with Liam Samuel becoming the next to go close, striking the outside of the post after Trundle and Follows combined to set him up.

Silcox then shot narrowly wide, while Webb did well to keep out at full stretch another Trundle attempt when he seized on a Follows pass and shot goalwards.

He was not to be denied his treble, however, which he completed after 75 minutes, brilliantly controlling a ball into the heart of the City defence before sidestepping the keeper and finding the net

An effort by Samuel deflected off home defender Nick Simcock and was destined for the net, but Webb brought off another fine save to divert it for a corner.

Another comfortable and convincing win for the Reds who have now racked up 34 goals from their opening eight league games, and head the table by six points from second placed Briton Ferry Llansawel, who they meet at Old Road next Friday evening in what should turn out to be a cracker. Kick off is at 7.30 p.m.
